The highest life form 2 billion years ago were the first complex cells.
Considering that the earth is about 4 billion years old ,
one walks through half of the earths geological history on the way down to the Colorado river .
The sandstone layers are deposits from a long gone shallow ocean , that covered the western part of North America .
An uplift started about 75 million years ago and pushed the area nearly 2 miles above sea level .
Erosion set in , and over millions of years water and wind carved a fascinating landscape of outstanding beauty .
